Antoinette van Hattem

Antoinette van Hattem is a programme maker, working from her agency ‘de Artiesteningang’. Originally she is a teacher of drawing, textile forms and art history, but after her study she started working in the cultural sector.

Since 1995, Antoinette has been putting together programmes with performing artists for cultural and commercial institutions. Villa Augustus in Dordrecht, for example, is a regular client, where she has been devising and organising the programme with a small team since 2007, resulting in concerts and inspiring encounters. “Art makes one look and listen better”, is the basic principle here.

In Rotterdam, since May 2018, ‘de Artiesteningang’ organises the Heerenhuyskamer concerts, an initiative of the Droom en Daad Foundation. Every Sunday morning an intimate concert takes place in the Heerenhuys in Het Park near the Euromast, ranging from jazz and pop to world music and classical, performed by musicians linked to Rotterdam.

Antoinette initiated the ZomerZondagen summer festival to create a meeting place where all Rotterdammers would feel welcome. From 2000 to 2016, Het Park bij de Euromast formed the beautiful green setting for this free cultural programme full of theatre, music and workshops.

Other clients include Hotel New York (since its opening in 1993), the Lezers Festival in the Central Library and the Rotterdam Opera Days.

Commissioned by Rotterdam Festivals, Antoinette provided surprising opening performances for the Year of Architecture and the launch of Parfum de Boem Boem, as well as a summer programme in the city centre, the specially developed opening concert and week-long programme during the history event ‘Tijdplein Rotterdam’, or a spectacle performance in the construction pit of Rotterdam Central Station, to kick off the years of work.

The above projects were a logical continuation of the period up to 1993, in which Antoinette worked for the Oerol Festival on Terschelling, the Metropolis Festival, Teatro Fantastico, the International Film Festival Rotterdam and HAL 4, at the time a stage for pop music and theatre.
