Giovanni Burke

I am Giovanni Burke, 34 years old and a Rotterdammer at heart. After finishing my master Sociology (Metropolitan Issues & Policy), I worked for several years in the financial sector in the field of mortgages. Blood is thicker than water, or it probably should be. Therefore, in addition to my job in the financial sector, I have spent the past few years returning to my real passion and ‘roots’, the social domain! For some time now, I have been able to make the switch completely and with great satisfaction.

So what have I been doing for the past few years you might ask? In principle, mainly conceptual and creative writing assignments for Vers Beton and the Stimuleringsfonds Creatieve Industrie, among others. By writing the conceptual framework together with my childhood friend Marwan Magroun, I was able to experience and co-initiate the very beginning of projects such as “Tokyo Stories” (KINO) and “The Life of Fathers”. Especially the alternation between project management, conceptual and creative writing fits my competences well and this makes it fun at the same time. Now that I can fully focus on the social domain, there is room for me to commit even more to our foundation, keep an eye on us through the socials and at www.studioblaak.nl.

At the moment, I am working particularly closely with Marwan Magroun, Daniel O’Grmazion and Jeffrey de Roode under the name Studio Blaak Foundation. Through this collective, we work as social bridge builders. We frequently use a combination of creative elements such as video and photography in order to contribute to a more nuanced world view.

Besides this, I’m often on the road with Raw Roets, one of the first artists signed under Winne’s label (Couture 33). Raw Roets recently released a well-received record and in this Covid19-infested period he’s doing some nice shows.
