Matthijs van Wijhe

Matthijs van Wijhe (1992) was admitted at the age of 14 to the young talent class at Rotterdam Conservatoire, where he subsequently obtained his Bachelor’s degree under Stéphane de May.  Matthijs continued his studies with Ellen Corver at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague. Matthijs also followed Masterclasses with, among others, Jean-Bernard Pommier, Paul Lewis, Joanna Mcgregor, Bart van Oort, Kathryn Stott, Igor Roma and Ronald Brautigam.

Matthijs has performed in various concert halls in the Netherlands and abroad, such as the Zeeuwse Concertzaal, the Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ, Kammermusiksaal des Beethovenhauses Bonn, the Wilminktheater Enschede, the Arnold Schönberg Zaal, the Anton Filipszaal and the Eduard Flipse, Jurriaanse and Grote Zaal of the Doelen. Furthermore, Matthijs worked together with, among others, the Doelen Ensemble, the Codarts String Orchestra, the Codarts Percussion Ensemble, the Residentie Orkest and the Orchestre de Picardie. Matthijs has also worked with conductors such as Arie van Beek, Jac van Steen and Ed Spanjaard.

Besides his interest in classical and romantic repertoire, Matthijs is very active in the field of contemporary music. For example, in 2015 he gave the world premiere of Sam Wamper’s solo composition Fight which was also dedicated to Matthijs. The same year he also gave the world premiere of Sam Wamper’s piano concerto ‘Maledizione’ with the Residentie Orkest conducted by Ed Spanjaard.

Matthijs is particularly committed to contemporary music of Dutch origin and has worked closely with composers such as Peter-Jan Wagemans, Sam David Wamper, Robin de Raaff and Klaas de Vries.
