Willem Romers

Willem Romers completed his conservatory studies at Codarts in 2017. During his studies he was nominated as a finalist of the Erasmus Jazz Prize, played in the Metropole Academy conducted by Vince Mendoza and did concerts with the Codarts Bigband at the North Sea Jazz Festival.

His playing is characterised by creativity, combined with a crystal-clear and deep sound. “Sensing at the right moment what the music needs and doing that with total dedication”. This makes Willem one of the most wanted drummers in the (inter)national jazz- and improvisation scene.

As a drummer Willem plays with Coal Harbour, Robert Koemans, Sebastiaan van Bavel, Kika Sprangers and many others. In 2018 he played the “Young Vip Tour” with Kika, a series of concerts along the leading jazz venues and festivals in the Netherlands (Bimhuis, Lantaren Venster, Paradox, Transition) ending with a concert at the North Sea Jazz Festival. This was followed by various tours abroad including Indonesia, China, Hungary and Belgium.

This year Willem started his own project Willem! consisting of Batavians Jesse Schilderink (saxophone) and Jelle Roozenburg (guitar). He composes the music for this trio and together they explore the possibilities of improvisation. Inspiration for his music comes from nature, landscapes, architecture, cooking, art and literature from the expressionism era (Marc Chagall, Edvard Munch).

In 2020 Willem! will release his first live EP with recordings from the canal festival in Amsterdam.
