Hosted by Batavier Christine Cornwell
Curated by Otto Rissanen, "Tides" consists of a complete musical experience in which the audience will be enjoying musical works inspired by different visual artists.
By the initiation of "Alma Sola Cello Quartet", Rotterdam based composer Otto Rissanen has written a piece, ‘A Tide’, for them. It is inspired by a selection of prints by M.C. Escher.
As a preface and epilogue for the Alma Sola Cello Quartet, a tailor made and a brand new ensemble "Spheres" will play a moving hallway concert in which they perform music inspired by different visual artists and their own open scores.

The Alma Sola Cello Quartet was founded in 2020 in Rotterdam. Coming from different countries, our curiosity to work together as a quartet started at Codarts, when we listened to each other during the lessons with our common teacher, Herre Jan Stegenga.
It is not common to play in a quartet of the same instrument, which makes it a demanding, but at the same time, fruitful process. It opened a door for us to experiment with the possibilities within the different registers of our instrument, each of us finding our own role in the quartet. The repertoire of this fresh ensemble is a fusion of different styles, from classical to modern music, creating many different atmospheres.
Otto Rissanen (FIN) is a Rotterdam based composer and a guitarist with a strong background in jazz. He has worked with different ensembles, film makers, visual artists and dancers to name a few. His pieces are often described as having a minimalist and a timbral based approach to them. In his works, he regularly likes to flirt with the border of concert music and the theater.
Spheres is an ensemble of composers, creators, improvisers, connected by the interest in the music momentum, inspired by visual works of different visual artists. Each of them will bring a piece or a concept to the table. Five different ideas, each of them bringing their personal interpretations and approaches into the ensemble.
