WORKSHOP
Embodiment through singing & movement
Jazz & world music vocalist Andria Antoniou is visiting from London for a one-off workshop and concert in Rotterdam
About the workshop
The workshop “Embodiment through singing & movement” offers an in-depth exploration of the relationship between breath, singing and movement with the aim to liberate the voice from unnecessary tension, physical and emotional blockages. We experience resonance and sound vibrations through the dynamic interplay between voice and flow of movement. In this safe space created we embrace both our strength and vulnerability with the aim to establish a profound connection between mind, body and spirit as an alternative way of healing.
At the second part of the workshop we are going to introduce the creative practice of “circle singing” exploring improvisation through the use of voice and any other sounds that can be produced by our bodies. In this collective game there is no right or wrong. The only requirement is an open mind and curiosity. Through this practice we are going to deepen our connection with ourselves and the other group members, develop a deep sense of active listening and expand our imagination. One of the group members starts by introducing a melody or/and rhythmic idea in a loop and the rest of us gradually enter in response to what we hear. In this way we create songs and soundscapes in the moment, celebrating the healing power of collective sound and tapping into our innate creativity.
Having experienced the power of collective creativity, we will learn a song from México and a song from Brazil to which we are going to apply circle singing practices.

Dedicated to the holistic and transformative power of performance, Andria has the ability to transfer her audience into "a sensual musical bubble” inviting them to an emotional and dynamic journey. She collaborated with prominent representatives of the Latin-jazz, Greek and musical theatre music scene: George Hatzinasios (Greece), the band ‘Classico Latino’ (Colombia & UK), Omar Puente (Cuba), Mario Bakuna (Brazil), Roman Gomez (Argentina) and the West End Musical Director, Greg Arrowsmith. Performance highlights include: Union Chapel London (UK), King’s place London (UK), St’ James Church (UK), Teatro Colón de Bogotá (CO), the Vortex (UK), Pizza Express Jazz club (UK), Fougaro Art Center (GR), Gialino Theatro (GR), Athina Live (GR), La Linea Latin music festival, amongst others. Andria released her first debut album with Roman Gomez entitled ‘Encuentro’ for which they received second place at the LUKAS 2019 award. She also features as a guest on Classico Latino’s latest album ‘Havana Classics’ recorded in 2018 at Egrem Studios in Cuba. Recent highlights include the creation of Greek-latin fusion band Babesa Cubana, the creative project ‘Wanderlust’ through which she aims to promote a sense of unity in cultural diversity, as well as the project ‘Female voices of Brazil’.
Andria’s belief that music education is one of the most valuable tools artists can posses to make positive change, led her to create a platform and community called ‘VoiceHub’, offering a variety of workshops, group work and private tuition. Her artistic expression is based on improvisation, open interaction and experimentation with a deep interest in the voice and body connection.
