"TARTARUS Ensemble blends different elements of jazz, contemporary, classical, electronic, and even metal by weaving them into a full album-length story.
Adriaan Lips, the bandleader, composer, pianist, and accordionist of TARTARUS, got the idea that music must come from the ‘underworld’ during a musical discussion with his composition teacher at Codarts. This referred to a completely authentic and unabashed sound, something entirely disconnected from external expectations. That’s the origin of the name TARTARUS, the ancient Greek term for the underworld.
This resulted in a mix of influences that have rarely been combined so far, such as electronic, jazz, classical, metal, and opera. This is also reflected in our instrumentation consisting of vocals (Hanna Aïlane), (bass) clarinet (Nuno Cuñha), cello (Lluïsa Paredes), electric guitar (Leonardo Franceschini), drums (Owen Puijpe), and electronics. This combination of instruments and sounds provides a refreshing and innovative sound, where each individual can add their own musicality. This becomes especially apparent in more improvised sections (where interaction is key), alternating with written work.
Besides this philosophy, TARTARUS also believes in storytelling. This combination of styles is ultimately used to tell the story of a powerful but friendly AI that is born, gains consciousness, experiences loneliness, deteriorates, and is finally set free. Each piece in this concert (called The Omnipotent Orphan) is a chapter from its story."

TARTARUS Ensemble mengt verschillende elementen jazz, contemporain, klassiek, elektronica en zelfs metal door ze te verweven in een volledig albumlang verhaal.
Adriaan Lips, de bandleider, componist, pianist en accordeonist van TARTARUS, kwam bij een muzikale discussie met zijn docent compositie op Codarts op het idee dat muziek uit de "onderwereld" moet komen. Dat sloeg op een compleet authentiek en onbeschaamd geluid, iets dat volledig is losgekoppeld van externe verwachtingen. Dat is de origine van de naam TARTARUS, de oud-Griekse term van de onderwereld.
Dit resulteerde in een mengelmoes van invloeden die tot nu toe weinig zijn vermengt, zoals elektronica, jazz, klassiek, metal en opera.
Dit wordt ook gereflecteerd in onze instrumentatie dat bestaat uit zang (Hanna Aïlane) (bas-)klarinet (Nuno Cuñha), Cello (Lluïsa Paredes), El. gitaar (Leonardo Franceschini) en drums (Owen Puijpe) en elektronica. Deze combinatie van instrumenten en geluiden zorgen voor een verfrissende en vernieuwende sound, waarbij ieder individu zijn/haar eigen muzikaliteit kan toevoegen. Dit wordt vooral duidelijk in meer geïmproviseerde delen (waarin de interactie centraal staat) die worden afgewisseld met uitgeschreven werk.
Naast deze filosofie gelooft TARTARUS ook in het vertellen van verhalen. Deze combinatie van stijlen wordt uiteindelijk toegepast om het verhaal te vertellen van een machtige maar vriendelijke A.I. die wordt geboren, bewustzijn krijgt, eenzaamheid ervaart, aftakelt en tot slot wordt vrijgelaten. Elk stuk in dit concert (genaamd The Omnipotent Orphan) is een hoofdstuk uit zijn verhaal.
