Sitar player Nicolas Mortelmans releases his debut album. MĀYĀ is a unique sitar album that consists of a mix of traditional Indian music with Western influences. The sitar is the common thread throughout the album, in each song the instrument is approached in a different way. Traditional Indian sounds flow into Western influences from electronics, jazz and rock music, among others.
The record will be released on 12/04/’24 on WERF Records and can be heard live for the first time at Batavierhuis! Nicolas Mortelmans presents the album with a quartet of fantastic musicians: Tarang Poddar, Jonas Meersmans, Greet Meert & Mortelmans himself. Together they play songs from the album MĀYĀ, but there is also room for improvisation live. Expect a meditative and explosive concert.
Mortelmans is a sitar player from Lier/Antwerp and a student of Anoushka Shankar.
You may know him as a member of Condor Gruppe, Roland van Campenhout, Leki, Merdan Taplak… he also recorded for Dijf Sanders, among others. Mortelmans regularly plays solo concerts and is now also releasing his first album!
