Magda Mendes

Magda Mendes, born and raised in Lisbon, has in recent years introduced the people of Rotterdam to Fado, which originated in Lisbon. She toured all corners of the port city with her programme ‘Silencio! de fado wanders through Rotterdam’, reaching a large audience. After presenting her latest programme Oliveiras, in September 2018 she won the Gouden Notekraker, the professional prize of and for performing artists awarded by SENA.

The Portuguese singer, living in Rotterdam for seventeen years, makes small-scale, autonomous productions. She has released three albums under her own name, with Portuguese folklore (documentary Casa da Bôxa 2011), fado classics (Silêncio 2015) and the personal Oliveiras (2018), with which she is touring the major stages until the end of 2020. Oliveiras’ self-written songs are set in the countryside of central Portugal. A region that often made the news recently because it was ravaged by various forest fires. A forgotten region whose history threatens to go up in smoke. Together with her regular accompanist and co-author Ward Veenstra, she wrote songs that give voice to stories that escaped the fire.
